As most Idol fans know, this season we’ll see a huge change in the show’s format with the introduction of a 4th judge. Kara DioGuardi is an accomplished songwriter and has worked with past contestants, including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Clay Aiken, David Archuleta, and Bo Bice to name a few. But just because she’s worked with past Idols, this doesn’t cement her success as the show’s new judge. I am excited to see how she’ll fit in to the show that has such high viewer expectations.
To start things off, many people will surely have mixed opinions about the fact that a fourth judge evens out the ‘trifecta’ that used to only need 2 votes to go to Hollywood, in spite of Simon’s often insistent objections. Especially because rumor has it that Simon will be the deciding vote in the case of a tie.
People Magazine quotes Kara DioGuardi as having been “…a little bit [intimidated]” to join the judges’ panel, but says she will “hold [her] own.” She will even out the male-female score, as Paula has been the sole female voice for so long. DioGuardi is supposedly another feisty spirit but she says in Entertainment Weekly, “Paula and I have a good vibe, I’m not of the thinking that women should drag each other down.” Cool! I agree, ladies!
Paula has been quoted as saying she is excited about the new dynamic and will try to “gang up against the guys”. That should be interesting. The 3 judges have become such a fixture. There are now a lot of variables that could spell success or disaster for the 4th judge.
All of the judges have set personalities on the show, and even a set seating order. Kara will sit between Paula and Randy. I can’t wait to see how DioGuardi’s character plays out. Will she be a female Simon? Will she butt heads with Paula? I’d love to see her be a lively opponent to Simon’s ruthlessness, but so often he’s right! Also in January’s issue of Entertainment Weekly, DioGuradi says her biggest challenge will be “being aware of when to shut up.” And NO, she’s not being introduced as a future replacement for Paula!
Ultimately, I think Paula says it best in her interview with Us Magazine, “I am concerned about the audience and acceptance. Time will tell. We’ll see.”
If the addition of a 4th judge creates a fun camaraderie it will add a new level of excitement, but if it creates a rivalry or conflict between the judges, I think it will have a heavy negative weight on the show and contestants. The last thing I want to see is the judges arguing. With less than a week until the premiere, I’m on the edge of my seat to see how this pans out!
